Sports Photographer First Night

My first night working for the Beckley Register-Herald as a freelance sports photographer was Friday, September 16, 2016. Meadow Bridge Wildcats came to Fayetteville High School to battle the Pirates. It was an awesome experience and so much fun!

It was quite fitting that my first high school football game was Fayetteville vs Meadow Bridge. I have lived in Fayetteville for 11 years now so it was really sweet to shoot them for my first game. Not only that, but the field is close to my house, so that made it easier to get back to my house quickly to edit the photographs. The deadline was 10 pm in order to get them to press for Saturday’s newspaper.

My audition game was two weeks prior. It was Oak Hill vs. Liberty. You can read about that game here: Oak Hill vs. Liberty. That was a ton of fun too!

In high school I was lucky enough to get to play on the football team. Anyone who played high school sports knows how golden those days become as we get older. The memories become so much more nostalgic and we surely do miss those games. The opportunity to be a high school sports photographer is a great way to relive some of those memories.

It was nice to be part of the atmosphere. The sounds of the crowd. The press box. The band. The game announcer. The sound of the players yelling to their teammates. Coaches yelling at the players. The pads crashing in tackles. It was great to experience that again. Being the photographer on the sidelines put me back in the action

The game was a blowout. The Fayetteville Pirates have a great team this year and they crushed the Meadow Bridge Wildcats 58-14. Can’t wait for the next game.
