Artist With a Passion for Photography

Fayetteville, WV Photographer

Hi. I’m Chad Foreman, Passionate about art and photography for as long as I can remember, it is an honor and a privilege to use them to create the life I love. Every moment that ticks by is an opportunity to capture a piece of this beautiful world around us. From weddings, portraits of families, children, expecting moms and dads, pets, sports, flowers, landscapes, waterfalls, sunsets, creative lighting….. there’s really no limit on the amount of art that can be made with a camera.

Lifelong Love

Like most people, I have been taking pictures my whole life. I always wanted a nice SLR (single lens reflex) camera and then eventually a Digital SLR. My dream finally came true in 2009 when I got my first DSLR. It was a Canon 50D. I immediately started to collect lenses. In 2016 I finally upgraded to a Canon DSLR with a full-frame sensor. More on that in a technical blog post sometime in the near future.

This is an example of how easy it is to update your site.

Grade School Art

In elementary school, my art teacher, Mrs. Liefeld was very encouraging. She always had positive praise for the work I did and always boosted my self-confidence. Without that, I don’t think I could have continued to pursue art. In high school, I had a great art teacher. He taught me a lot of the fundamentals in a fun yet educational manner.

US Army

In 1991, at the tender age of 17, I enlisted in the United States Army’s Split Option program. This allowed me to complete Basic Combat Training between my Junior and Senior years of high school and then drill with a reserve unit. It was something I always wanted to do and my thirst for adventure outweighed my need for education. I was fortunate to join the 246th PSYOP Group based out of Blacklick, Ohio. I was in a Tactical Dissemination Platoon. Our job was to operate loudspeakers with sound effects and a surrender appeal. I was looking forward to a long career as a PSYOP.

The Accident

On June 16, 1992, my life was forever changed. While riding a bicycle down a busy street in Columbus, Ohio, a van driver parked on the side of the road opened his door. The door hit me, knocking me to the ground. The car behind me did not stop in time and ran over me. I was dragged under the car for about 50 feet. The car ran over my pelvis, crushing it into pieces. The recovery was long, difficult and painful, but I escaped with a new outlook on life.

West Virginia Whitewater

In 1997 my love for photography met my newest passion, whitewater. I left Columbus, Ohio to come to Fayetteville, West Virginia to become a raft guide. It was there I discovered video boating. Video boating is an interesting career, found in only a few places in the world. It’s very popular in West Virginia. A video boater paddles a kayak with a commercial whitewater rafting trip and makes a video of the rafts going through the rapids. Start off with some guest introductions, add in some slow-motion playback, throw in a rocking sound-track and some creative commentary and you have a custom-made whitewater movie. on life.

Back to School

In 2003 I went back to school to finish my degree in graphic design. While working on my 2-year Associate’s of Science in Communications Technology, I took a Photography 101 class. I absolutely loved it. Everything about it was fascinating to me. The science and mechanics of the camera, the art of composition and use of light, the digital software. Everything excited me. My intention was to become a graphic and website designer, although I really wanted to be a photographer. At the time, my money went towards school and the cost of living. There wasn’t any room to purchase the necessary camera body and lenses that it would take to become a professional photographer. So I continued to work towards my degree.

Work is Fun

Today I spend all of my working hours on my photography. I prefer to be out capturing light with my camera but I do enjoy editing the pictures and really bringing them all together. Also I spend some time working on my website and social media. It’s pretty fun to be able to have an occupation that lends itself to social media. Photos go good on social media. They’re a necessary part of modern marketing. I still do some graphic design and website design on the side too.

Kayaking for Fun

Kayaking is still my favorite sport of leisure and recreation. I paddle a lot and probably get close to 100 days per year in my kayak. Mostly I’m a play boater, or freestyle kayaker. When it’s cold out I like to run rivers. My kayaking friends and I continually talk about how lucky we are to live in one of the best places in the world to live and kayak. We have it so good here. The New River runs all year long and the Gauley runs pretty often. These are both world-class rivers and there are other smaller rivers that are fun to paddle too.

Crossfit Training

CrossFit is my favorite form of straight up fitness and strength training. I love the style of workout. The strength training is great and the metabolic conditioning is the best. It really helps me improve my kayak surfing. But there’s more to CrossFit than just the fitness. There’s a comradery aspect that is hard to beat. When you train and work and sweat and feel pain with people, there is a bond that is formed. A friendship that goes beyond a typical friendship. There is something to be said for that but it’s really hard to say.

Home Improvement

Home improvement is something I also love. I’m a bit of a Do-It-Yourselfer. The house I purchased was a fix-er-upper. I spent quite a many frustrated, stressed out, dirty, tired, sore hours rebuilding this house from the inside out. I also love crafts and hobbies. My newest craft is woodworking and I am very excited to be making my own custom frames for my photographs very soon.
